The hills of Dushanbe

Spent Saturday afternoon in the sparse, rolling hills just west of Dushanbe.  It’s an almost otherworldly landscape of big brown hills and narrow valleys, linked at the head of the valleys by a ridge line with impressive views to snow-capped mountains in the distance.  People walking the ridge trail look tiny set against the landscapes of hills, mountains and valleys in all directions.  I try not to notice the haze of pollution hovering over the capital in the other direction.  A lone sheep dog barks incessantly at us…I decide he does not like having his picture taken.  The children we meet later in the hike, however, are happy to get in a photo.  They and their families appear to be entertained by the foreigners that wind their way through the homesteads on the edge of the valleys.

Small people, big nature
